Wetland Micro-Adventures

Mtm Pfrunger Burgweiler Ried

Do we actually know the wilderness right on our doorstep? We often spend weeks planning the perfect vacation, booking flights, and traveling to the most remote places to experience unique landscapes and exotic nature. Yet beauty is so close at hand!

The moor is the best proof of that. It’s not a dreary wasteland—it’s an underrated hotspot full of secrets that hardly anyone knows about. If you haven’t decided where to go next weekend yet, here are three reasons why a microadventure on the moor will surprise you more than any picture-perfect trip to a faraway destination.

Mtm Blog: Micro Adventures—Moor, Sundew

1. Carnivorous plants? We’ve got them!

When people think of exotic plants, they usually picture the tropical rainforest. But did you know that we have our very own carnivorous exotic plants right here in our local bogs? The sundew is an absolute wonder of nature. With its glittering, sticky tentacles, it catches insects right in the middle of the bog. If you look closely, you’ll discover a plant that looks like something out of a science fiction movie. And that’s just one of many specialists: How many of us can even name typical bog plants like the white, fluffy cottongrass or the bell heather these days? In the bog, you’ll become a true plant explorer.

2. Magic doesn’t exist? Then you haven’t been here at the right time yet

If you want to experience the moor at its most fascinating, you’ll need to time your visit right. Head out very early in the morning, when the fog still hangs low over the water, or come at sunset, when the light bathes the landscape in warm golden hues. In these moments, the moor is enveloped in an almost surreal, magical silence. It smells of damp earth, the light refracts through the dew-covered spiderwebs, and you suddenly feel your heart rate slow down. This isn’t just a regular walk—it’s pure magic.

3. The perfect stopover on the way to the beach

The great thing is: there are bogs almost everywhere in the world—and in Germany, they’re mainly found in the north and south. So the next time you’re packed into the car on your way to the North Sea or the Baltic Sea, don’t stop at the usual noisy highway rest stop. Find a moor along the way. Put on your rubber boots, walk along the wooden planks for half an hour, fill your lungs with moor air—and your vacation will already be underway halfway there.
